World Community Grid is pleased to launch the Help Conquer Cancer project by the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), Princess Margaret Hospital and University Health Network of Toronto, Canada. The mission of Help Conquer Cancer is to improve the results of protein X-ray crystallography, which helps researchers not only annotate unknown parts of the human proteome, but importantly improves their understanding of cancer initiation, progression and treatment. Project Participation
Help Conquer Cancer is the ninth research project to be launched on World Community Grid and one of five projects currently active. The other four active research projects are: AfricanClimate@Home, (launched August, 2007), Discover Dengue Drugs – Together (launched August, 2007), Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 (launched July, 2006) and FightAIDS@Home, (launched November, 2005). For more detailed information and FAQs about each of these projects, please click on the Research button in the upper navigation bar or click here. We thank all of our members for all of their valuable contributions to the projects to date and hope you will continue to help us process those, as well as this latest project.

Because there are five research projects running on World Community Grid, your grid agent could receive work units from any of the projects. You may elect to focus your computer's time on only particular projects, if you have a preference. To do so, press the My Grid button in the upper navigation bar and select My Projects or click here. Please note, that members were not automatically opted in to the AfricanClimate@Home project due to the computationally intensive code. To read more specifics on the system requirements for Help Conquer Cancer and the other projects, click here.

If you are already a member of World Community Grid, running the BOINC version of our software, there's nothing that you have to do to prepare for the Help Cure Cancer project. The next time your grid agent communicates with the servers, it will send you a work unit from one of the projects at random for which your machine meets the minimum requirements and according to your project participation election preference. To know which project you are running, please double-click on World Community Grid icon in the system tray, and you will see the title of the project in the display. To contribute to the Help Conquer Cancer project, you will need to be using the BOINC software rather than the United Devices software. If you are running the United Devices version of our software, you should use this occasion to migrate to the BOINC software so that you may participate in all current and future research projects. You may migrate to BOINC by following the instructions here. Migrating is easy and takes less than 5 minutes. The install process even uninstalls the UD software for you automatically.

Help Conquer Cancer

Project Status and Findings:
Information about this project is provided on the web pages below and by the project scientists on the Help Conquer Cancer website. To comment or ask questions about this project, please submit a post in the Help Conquer Cancer forum.

Mission
The mission of Help Conquer Cancer is to improve the results of protein X-ray crystallography, which helps researchers not only annotate unknown parts of the human proteome, but importantly improves their understanding of cancer initiation, progression and treatment.

Significance
In order to significantly impact the understanding of cancer and its treatment, novel therapeutic approaches capable of targeting metastatic disease (or cancers spreading to other parts of the body) must not only be discovered, but also diagnostic markers (or indicators of the disease), which can detect early stage disease, must be identified.

Researchers have been able to make important discoveries when studying multiple human cancers, even when they have limited or no information at all about the involved proteins. However, to better understand and treat cancer, it is important for scientists to discover novel proteins involved in cancer, and their structure and function.

Scientists are especially interested in proteins that may have a functional relationship with cancer. These are proteins that are either over-expressed or repressed in cancers, or proteins that have been modified or mutated in ways that result in structural changes to them.

Improving X-ray crystallography will enable researchers to determine the structure of many cancer-related proteins faster. This will lead to improving our understanding of the function of these proteins and enable potential pharmaceutical interventions to treat this deadly disease.

November 16, 2007, brings us to the three-year anniversary of World Community Grid! In this short time, results on critical health issues have been achieved, demonstrating World Community Grid's potential to make significant inroads on a great range of future projects that can benefit the world.

There are many thanks to go around for getting us to this point in time. But the largest kudos go to our volunteer force -- the nearly 338,000+ members who have registered more than 800,000 work stations. These computers have provided more than 124 thousand years of run time toward important research and have sent back more than 128 million results, which is an impressive 1 result per second. We are extremely grateful for your contributions. Without you, this compute power would not be available for the very important research work we are helping to accelerate.

The Forum Community Advisors (a.k.a CAs) also deserve a special thank you. The CAs work tirelessly on the forums, answering questions and providing useful information, for very few rewards, except the satisfaction that they have helped get and retain more members on World Community Grid.

Thank you to the researchers for running their projects on World Community Grid. This includes:

IBM宣布,為解決全球糧荒問題,將透過世界社群網格(World Community Grid;WCG),投入「世界稻米營養工程」新研究計畫,希冀開發出能增加榖物收成的方式,並找出更優生的稻米品種。

世界社群網格為全球最大的公益網格運算平台,由IBM建構、管理及執行,並號召全球電腦使用者獻出個人電腦閒置時間,集結全球的運算資源,協助科學家更快完成研究。

 糧食危機迫在眉睫,IBM世界社群網格(WCG)與美國華盛頓大學共同宣布,發起「世界稻米營養工程」新研究計畫。該社群計畫副總裁羅賓威納(Robin Willner)昨日來台宣導表示,這可使原本要200年才能完成的計畫,縮短在2年內完成,及時解決糧食問題。台灣除了多個社群,成大、師大附中也加入。 WCG共集結全球超過100萬台電腦加入,透過網格技術連結電腦的閒置運算資源,總運算能力等於是全球第3大虛擬超級電腦。簡單說,就是位在全世界電腦透過連結,進行研究。 目前以台灣識別登入的成員有2,000多名,連線電腦超過9,000台,包括玉山銀行、成大、師大附中、小黑俱樂部等產學單位和社群。 師大附中剛成為全球第388位、台灣第3位加入世界社群網格的夥伴,該校資訊中心主任李啟龍表示,師生對此計畫反應熱絡,不僅在學校使用的電腦註冊,自家電腦也投入計畫。 成大提出150台電腦參與網格運算,研發長曾永華表示,電腦閒置時,轉去進行網格計算,為解決人類問題做一些貢獻,非常有意義。只是電腦沒人用仍開機要用一些電,是唯一缺點。 羅賓威納說明,該計畫要分析的蛋白質結構多達3萬至6萬個,若以實驗室傳統試驗方法識別各種關鍵蛋白質的詳細結構及弁遄A肯定超過數十年。現在利用世界社群網格來執行,可將原本需要200年運算時間、才能在華盛頓大學資料中心達成的研究工作,縮短在2年內完成。 預計研究工程完成時,將製成一份歷年來最大、最詳盡的蛋白質及相關弁鉆狪苤A協助農學家及農民揀選最優生的禾苗進行水稻雜交,以改善稻米質素和產量。

WCG總運算能力等於是全球第3大虛擬超級電腦, 那第1及第2分別是那一個呢?
第1是:Folding@home
第2是:SETI@Home

哇, 原來SETI@Home不是第1, 原因可能有兩個:
1.轉到BOINC平台, 對S@H的打擊很大, 至少跑掉90%的人
2.沒有推出GPU版本及PS3版本

個人覺得第二個原因 比第一個原因還要大
小弟的Q6600 約 30 GFLOPS
我的 HD 2900XT 約 480 GFLOPS
顯示卡的浮點運算贏過4核心CPU16倍

雖然HD 2900XT 不能跑Folding@home
但是較舊的 X1900 系列可以跑 雖然沒有新的顯示卡快 但是還是遠超過頂級的CPU
PS3也是

Technical Advisory: World Community Grid Moving Servers to a New Location

World Community Grid is getting brand new equipment and relocating its servers to a new IBM location. There is no action required on your part but we wanted you to be aware of the move.

The move starts on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 in the evening (approximately 0300 UCT January 8, 2009) and will require us to bring down the website for up to 48 hours.

During the downtime, your computer will be able to continue processing work units for your favorite World Community Grid research project. Your computer will know when the servers are back up and will then continue normal processing.

The move may cause your firewall to prompt you about World Community Grid. If this happens, please re-approve your computers access to World Community Grid.

Influenza Antiviral Drug Search (抗流感藥物研究)

Project Status and Findings:

Mission
The mission of the Influenza Antiviral Drug Search project is to find new drugs that can stop the spread of an influenza infection in the body. The research will specifically address the influenza strains that have become drug resistant as well as new strains that are appearing. Identifying the chemical compounds that are the best candidates will accelerate the efforts to develop treatments that would be useful in managing seasonal influenza outbreaks, and future influenza epidemics and even pandemics.

Significance
Hundreds of thousands of people around the world die each year as a result of influenza infections. If a particularly virulent strain emerges that is readily transmitted among humans, a pandemic can potentially kill millions of people. The influenza virus mutates rapidly and therefore new varieties of influenza appear each year. Influenza vaccines are designed to anticipate the strains likely to be prevalent for the next flu season but can often miss newly evolved varieties. While drugs such as oseltamivir (commercial name Tamiflu) and zanamivir (commercial name Relenza) help keep influenza from spreading in the body, they do not work for all types of influenza and new drug resistant forms of influenza evolve and cannot be treated with these drugs. When drug resistant strains emerge, manufacturers designing vaccines may not be able to respond quickly enough to prevent a large outbreak of the disease. This project will search for promising new drug leads that stop the replication of the influenza viruses within the body, potentially helping patients who are not immune to a particular form of influenza. The discovery of both broad-spectrum and specific antiviral drugs is expected to significantly improve global health.

Approach
One promising approach to combat these viruses and prevent them from causing disease is to develop new drugs that inhibit neuraminidase (N1, N2, etc), NS1 protein, hemagglutinin, and possibly other targets that influenza needs to spread in the body. Using the known chemical structures of these target molecules, the project will perform virtual chemistry experiments and determine which of millions of known compounds attach to these target molecules in a manner that can disable or inhibit them, thus potentially keeping the influenza virus from spreading in the body. These experiments are performed using a program called AutoDock, from the Scripps Research Institute. This software is used for several other projects on World Community Grid. These include FightAIDS@Home, Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together, and Help Fight Childhood Cancer projects. Once drug candidates are identified using World Community Grid, then additional laboratory work, testing and ultimately drug trials will be required. This will likely not lead to any immediate treatments for influenza during the current H1N1 outbreak. However, influenza viruses cause recurrent seasonal disease outbreaks and have the potential for evolving into dangerous forms. Thus, proceeding on this project at this time will give us a better chance to be prepared for more serious outbreaks in the future.

去年PCDVD曾號召F@H計畫裏台灣前三強團隊合組一個超強新團隊, 稱為Taiwan team, 有點類似SETI@Taiwan與SETI@Formosa合併一樣, 合併後好處顯而易見, 名次馬上往前排, 曝光率增加不少。

可是目前台灣尚沒有跨計畫整合的規劃, 我覺得很可惜, 以WCG計畫來看, 最強的團隊應是PCDVD@Taiwan, 好像有進入BOINC世界百大團隊排行之一, 而SETI計畫是SETI@Taiwan最強, 同樣都是BOINC平台, 如果可以合併, 不會影響團隊在各計畫裏的排名, 但合併後會提升在boinc團隊排名, 所以有利無弊, 惟一不同的是如果要跨計畫整合, 隊名都要改

要有力人士吧 @@
Folding 滄者論壇大大 出力很多 還出卡 超有心.
幾大Project論壇頭頭可能也是需要找機會要喬一喬吧.
當然全都集中一團隊 分數是一定很精彩
台灣人都喜歡幾個人自己搞小團隊研發(中小企業來看)
也不是一定都不好 不過規模就是限制住了.
台灣民族性 是沒像內地那樣的 ~~怎說呢 不容易凝聚 (看政治就知了...離題了當我自我喃喃自語@@)
所以凝聚各project 高積分大大們的戰力 這些頭頭們要多參詳參詳怎個做法囉~~
